Musical Theatre

Amber has been working with my daughter Georgia (13) for just over a month now. Georgia has always loved to sing, but previously only really in private: her anxiety, which affects all aspects of her life, has generally prevented her from singing in front of other people. Even when auditioning for parts at her drama group, performing has been difficult. Her voice has always been attractive, when she concentrates on what she is singing, but her ability to project has been negligible – I don’t know whether this is anxiety, actual voice issues or both, but it doesn’t really matter.
After her second lesson with Amber, her mother and I heard her practising, and were astounded. She truly sounded like an entirely different person, projecting her song with vigour and power. And, after this week’s lesson, she sought out her mother and asked her if they could sing together. This was previously unimaginable!
Georgia is autistic, and her problems with anxiety affect every aspect of her life. I won’t say that her life has changed entirely, but she is far more open, outgoing and just plain pleasant to be with than she was before. Her life, and by extension our lives have already been significantly improved by working with Amber. And for that, we are massively grateful.

​I have been so lucky to have had Amber on my tutor team to cover vocal lessons when I was unavailable to teach. Amber taught several of my students across a range of ages and abilities on a one-to-one basis online, via zoom. The feedback notes sent weekly to students have been detailed, with simplified language for younger students, and have provided clarity along with concise rehearsal notes. All of my students have loved working with Amber, and have utilised her vast experience in music and theatre to strengthen their own vocal prowess. Amber has helped students to understand how to connect to a lyric through character, expression and emotion; as well as demonstrating how to connect to the diaphragm through use of mouth movement and breath control. Students have also been given pointers on how to move smoothly through register transitions, the importance of diction and pronunciation, and ultimately how to sustain the power and stamina needed when performing big numbers. Not only has Amber shared her expertise in this field, she has also helped students understand the importance of vocal health, and of the awareness of mindful movement of energies within the body to promote musical flow, and for mental well-being. Thank you so much Amber, I hope I can call on you again in the future! I know my students would love to have you back!

Acting Through Song

​An amazing singing lesson with the brilliant Amber Topaz. Amber helped me get out of my head and into my body, releasing tension and strain I didn’t even know I was carrying. Her keen yet relaxed insight allowed me to connect with the music on a much deeper level.

Rather than chasing the “perfect” sound, Amber encouraged me to approach challenging technical sections through acting and characterization. Using playful code words and archetypes, she helped me bring color, light, and shade to each song, unlocking the emotion and story behind it. With her guidance, I was able to let go of overthinking and just breathe. And boom, the songs just started flowing. 

 

If you need help with audition songs, creating an act, vocal health, or acting through song, I can’t recommend Amber enough. After just one session, I feel empowered and a huge sense of relief and am now hitting notes that were stressing me out before—with ease. Amber’s playful yet clear, masterful direction helped me unlock each song in such a unique way. She’s a true artist, an inspiring guide, and an absolute gem.

I have been involved in each of the lessons that Lizzy has taken with Amber and Lizzy has gained a great deal from them. Amber has been great with Lizzy and I do believe that her advice and techniques has improved Lizzy's voice. The biggest things have been to gain control of her voice types better, use techniques to help push through difficult sections, and learning to perform a song, understanding the song's context. A good example was Lizzy's last run of Heart of Stone, she was truly amazing and I think, surprised herself. I also have to convey thanks to Amber for showing understanding of Lizzy and her fidgety nature. There was a lesson where she just would not keep still and Amber handled the situation so well. It has been a great experience, very beneficial and I would be happy to recommend Amber to other students.”
